E.S.S.O. takes us through his evolution from HBCU, Music Industry to making moves in Media.
Soo E.S.S.O. let’s catch up, we interviewed you previously . For those that don’t know you went to Morgan State University, which is a Historically Black University in Baltimore, Maryland and Majored in Political Science. Did you learn your great debating skills there?
“I was always like this! My outgoing personality is inspired by my Mother, she wanted me to be a lawyer …but as much as I’m outgoing, I’m also introspective and strategic like my Father. My Father always tells people “E.S.S.O. has a calculator in his head”.”
After Morgan State, You really earned your way into the Music Industry. You became known as a Manager of both Producers and Recording Artists.
How is Managing Producers different than Managing Artists ?
“From a money standpoint Producers make money on residuals …versus an Artist makes money on Shows, appearances, brand deals. For example, when I was managing Rockwilder (whom is a producer) he didn’t need security. I didn’t have to worry about his safety as much because Producers don’t necessarily garner attention everywhere they go. On the other hand… when I managed the Singer Mya … I had to be way more hands on! An Artist needs hair and makeup … people and fans are always trying to walk up to them so they also need security.”
At the height of your time as a Manager what was your day-to-day schedule like?
“There was no schedule! I was working 24 hours a day… sometimes I would work 23 hours and then sleep for one hour. For SEVEN YEARS straight I didn’t even take a vacation! It was soo intense that while my daughter was living in my household (and I was soo busy) STILL I had to figure out how to schedule in time to see her.”
Now, You’ve moved into Media and Content Creation with an emphasis on Podcasts. We’ve seen you interview Offset, 21 Savage and Sleepy Hallow (and more). You really appear to be a natural conversationalist both in person and on camera ..Do you prepare for interviews?
“Thank You! Everything that you’ve ever seen is impromptu. Yes actually… I’ve even been given the nickname “The Natural” . That’s actually a reference to an old baseball movie. If you watch my content it is a conversation! I really am who I am off and on camera. I definitely get that from my mom.”
Tell us what does Bagfuel mean?
“Bag means money…and I’m fueling young kid’s mind to get to the bag.”
Congratulations on your growth! You’re influencing the culture. For example, we first saw you wearing Umidubs and now we see soo many other people wearing Umidubs. Tell us more about this brand deal.
“Thank You. Actually it started as a brand deal and now I have a full relationship with Umidubs. I collaborated with them to create a capsule collection. I even host their events . I’ve learned over the years relationships are really important.”
Another partnership you have is with NAP Entertainment. Is NAP a venture or brand deal?
“I don’t own NAP and it’s not a brand deal. Actually I consider them like you.. they’re a platform that f — k with me. And I f — k with who f — k with me.”
